Kent grew up in Northern California, attended the University of California at Santa Barbara and received his MBA from Harvard Business School. He worked for Cummins Engine Co. for 5 years followed by 10 years in the personal computer industry. He then transitioned to the real estate industry in 1993 and worked for a series of developers of large master planned communities in Arizona, California, Florida, Oregon and Utah.
