Company Summary

Our system combines hydroponics and certain plant species in order to create a natural filtration system for rivers, streams and lakes. It allows cities and communities to rehabilitate their waterways without having to invest heavily into infrastructure and renovation. Lastly, we can improve the aquatic life in the Chicago River and help revitalize our local fisheries.

  • Director / Founder

    From May 2009 to December 2014 Zachary served as Vice President of Norman Distribution, Inc, a food distribution company he co-founded in May 2009. Aside from The Naru Project, Zachary is executing research on Industrial Hemp at Purdue University and advises on smaller sustainable projects. He holds a B.S. in Organizational Management and a certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Purdue University.

  • Director of Innovation / Founder

    Nick graduated with a BBA in Entrepreneurship from Wilkes University and built his first aeroponic system at the age of 19. In college, Nick built an aeroponics system and a 1000 gallon aquaponics system for a non-for-profit farm. He also spearheaded the mushroom plant research at 'The Plant' by building a pasteurizing system with a capacity of 250 gallons of growing media for mushrooms along with retrofitting a room into a fruiting chamber.

  • John Stewart
    Technology Assistant

    John is a senior at Valparaiso University, where he studies Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science. Past water quality projects were monitoring Valparaiso’s chain of lakes, determining the filtration abilities of Northwest Indiana’s marshlands and monitoring his home aquaponic garden. Currently, he is studying branch initiation in Neurospora crassa, and plans on continuing research on fungi’s genomics and molecular biology in Graduate School.

  • Operations & Strategy

    Dan Cohen is an MBA candidate at Purdue University’s Krannert School of Management. Prior to entering business school, he worked in project management for a defense contractor after three years in sales and marketing for a bedding manufacturer in the Chicago territory. Currently, Dan is a Consultant at Praxis Life Sciences, a boutique consulting firm located in Lake Forest, IL, that specializes in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

  • Lead Engineer / Water Purification Specialist

    Tad Snyder worked as an Account Manager at Nalco - An Ecolab Company, a global leader in water and energy solutions. In 2011 Tad founded the GOBI Project, a federally recognized 501(c)3 NFP, bringing sustainable ideas to a new audience through solar-powered mobile entertainment. Tad spends time experimenting modern farm techniques on his own 4-acre farm in Benton Harbor, MI and holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University.

  • Bioengineer / Patent Adviser

    Gwen Phanijphand graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and a concentration in computer science. Following Johns Hopkins, she worked as a patent examiner then at ImClone Systems, where she performed quality control for water and air systems. She enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate at New York Medical College then attended John Marshall Law School for her JD. She currently works in patent law at Orum & Roth, LLC.
