Company Summary

SURGE selects 10-12 promising startups to participate in each class. These entrepreneurs spend 3 months in Houston preparing their startups for rapid customer acquisition and financing. Each startup is partnered with segment experts, investors and energy leaders who serve as mentors. The program culminates at SURGE Day where the companies present to hundreds of investors and potential customers. SURGE invests between $30k-$80k in each company.

  • Kirk Brand Coburn
    Board Member, Managing Director, Co-founder

    Prior to leading SURGE, Coburn created and was CEO of Chief Outsiders (acq. 2010). Prior to Chief Outsiders, Coburn launched The PGA TOUR Network on Sirius XM (acq. by SIRI) and founded Pure Golf. Coburn started and was managing partner of BLUSH Marketing. Coburn has also worked as an outsourced executive (CMO, CFO, COO) for high-growth companies and was an executive at Dell Computers.

  • Sarah Groen
    Director, Co-founder

    Sarah was instrumental in the deal flow process and operation of SURGE I and has been key in developing relationships with investors across the country. Sarah has personally met with hundreds of energy investors and has used those connections to benefit SURGE. Prior to SURGE, she earned an MBA from Stanford where she focused on entrepreneurship. Prior to Stanford Sarah spent time as a private equity investor and investment banking analyst.

  • Mary Helen O'Leary
    CFO

    Mary Helen O’Leary works as CFO and director for SURGE, Tanglewood Partners, and DFJ Mercury. She is a principal for ProjectCFO. Over the past 20 years, Mary Helen has worked for several venture-backed technology companies throughout the entrepreneurial lifecycle, from start-up formation to IPO. Her experience ranges from software reseller companies to digital image hardware companies and she has worked in both strategy and finance positions.

  • Andrew Clark
    Board Member, Co-founder

    Andrew Clark is a founder and principal with The Castell Group, LLC an investment and advisory firm assisting companies in the technology business. He has a 30 year career spanning many facets of the technology and energy business. He is a prior President and Chairman of the Houston Angel Network. Andrew is associated with HTC and is a venture advisor with DFJ Mercury. His corporate career covers stints at Reliant Energy and Compaq Computer.

  • Blair Garrou
    Board Member, Co-founder

    Blair is a co-founder and Managing Director of DFJ Mercury, a seed and startup venture capital firm headquartered in Houston, Texas. Prior to DFJM, Blair was the CEO of Intermat, a Principal with Genesis Park, helped launch and was the Director of Operations for the HTC, led the formation of the Houston Angel Network, was an investment banker with BMO Nesbitt Burns, and began his career with Deloitte & Touche.

  • Keith Kreuer
    Board Member

    As a Principal with RedHouse Associates, Keith specializes in early stage angel investments. He is a venture adviser with DFJ Mercury and serves on Advisory panels for Gazzang and Performix. He co-founded PentaSafe in 1997 and served as Director of World-Wide Services & Support until it was acquired by NetIQ. Prior to that, Keith was co-founder and President of Penta, Inc. which was acquired by VeriCenter in February 2000.

  • Brett Perlman
    Co-founder

    Brett is currently President of Vector Advisors, a management consulting firm that provides services to telecommunications and energy clients. Prior to this, he served as Commissioner of the Public Utility Commission of Texas from 1999 to 2003. In this role, he was responsible for leading the successful restructuring of Texas' $17 billion electric utility industry and $4 billion telecommunications industry as these markets opened to competition.

  • Brian Landrum
    Board Member

    Brian is the President of Gexa Energy and was the COO at Reliant Energy and RRI Energy. Brian was also Chief Business Officer at Calera Corporation, a Khosla Ventures backed company.
    Prior to that, Brian was the general manager of the $1.5 billion displays business unit at Compaq Computer. Earlier in his career, he was a Senior Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Co. and a Manager at Accenture in San Francisco, Switzerland, and Germany.
