Remote microgrids in developing countries and utilities that sell power to low-income customers face difficulties with setting rates that generate cost recovery, monitoring usage, deterring theft, and limiting over-consumption to avoid brownouts.  The smart meter we've developed resolves these problems.  The technology is based on sensor network research from Carnegie Mellon University.
