After completing an electrical/electronic engineering course/apprenticeship, Ian ran a successful electrical contracting business, completing many site installations for Newell Dunford Engineering Ltd. who specialized in crushing equipment for mines, quarries and power stations. Later moving to Papua New Guinea providing communications infrastructure for Bougainville Copper Limited at their Panguna mine site.

After graduating in 1996 from the university of Sierra Leone, he taught for one year and since then he has been working in the humanitarian field for 15 years holding various high management positions.
