He joined Knight in 2002 and retired in July 2013. He is a member of the Boards of Special Olympics Connecticut, the Ronald McDonald House of NYC, and the Alfred E. Smith Foundation.

Ray Smith is a retired United States Marine Corps Major General. Ray is a highly decorated Marine who has commanded infantry units at all levels. His awards received for service in combat during the Vietnam War include the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Ray retired from the Marine Corps in 1999 after 34 years of service. He has since opened his own consulting company and served on multiple boards.
