As Associate Director of Stanford Research Institute’s (SRI's) AI Lab, he conceived and led development of the 1st natural-language data query system. He is co-founder of Symantec, held P&L responsibility for a top-200 software products business through its IPO, and held executive positions at Apple, a variety of software vendors, and a medical device company. He is a co-founder of the Association for Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.

A world-renowned expert in computer science, artificial intelligence and technology commercialization, he is the former Global Director of R&D where he created IBM’s delve into artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience and led the team that spawned IBM’s “Watson” technology. Post IBM, Jim was the CIO of Silicon Graphics, Brocade Communications, Altera and Synopsys. Jim received The Benjamin G Lamme Meritorious Achievement Medal.
