The transition to parenthood is a vulnerable time for new parents with life-long impact on child development. Powered by Two™ is training health care and social service providers to improve the standard of care for expectant parents. By increasing professional awareness and access to proven interventions that strengthen the parent couple relationship, rates of child maltreatment, poverty, and other fall-out from family fragmentation are reduced.

    Aly Frei, MN, RN, SANE, is director of the Becoming Parents Program was project director for the Seattle site of the federal Supporting Healthy Marriage Project, a multi-site national demonstration project evaluating the impact of couple-focused interventions for low-income parents Aly earned both her BS and her Master’s degrees in Nursing from the UW with expertise in forensic nursing and intimate partner violence in special populations.

    More than 25 years experience as a leader in both profit and non-profit sectors, specializing in working with early stage organizations. She is currently a consultant at MissionWise (www.missionwise.org), and collaborator/consultant to evolving organizations and individuals. Previously she was vice president at a national public relations firm, COO for an educational publisher, and director of product development for a curriculum developer.

    Research & Approach

    Dr. Jordan is an Associate Professor of Family and Child Nursing at the University of Washington and developer of the Becoming Parents Program. Her research focuses on the transition to parenthood and supporting individuals and couples as they become parents. She has developed a middle range theory of the experience of expectant and new fatherhood, and her work with fathers continues to inform the care of men as they become parents. The Becoming
