Company Summary

We give voice to experts and create fresh media sources. Our mission is to promote transparency and to broaden the scope of expertise used in the media.

Kuka is a website and mobile service that enables journalists and experts to connect quickly and efficiently. The pilot version of Kuka is now in daily use in Helsingin Sanomat, the largest subscription newspaper in the Nordic countries. Finland's national public-broadcasting company Yle and a commerce-oriented newspaper Kauppalehti are also piloting Kuka.

As journalism has become increasingly hectic, the experts utilized are often the ones that already appear frequently in the media. This is a major problem that affects all of us; according to recent research, the decision makers and politicians largely make their choices based on expert opinions presented in the media.

Kuka proposes a dual solution to this problem.

First, journalists can search for relevant contacts from Kuka’s broad, efficient and up-to-date database of experts. Second, Kuka will provide a channel for experts to comment on current issues. The experts will also be able to find journalists covering their fields of expertise and announce new research projects.

In September 2015 Kuka was awarded €125,000 top prize in the media innovation contest organized by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation. The contest seeks groundbreaking ideas for developing and creating sustainable business models for journalism.

The goal of Kuka is to promote and enable transparent and varied use of expertise in the media and in decision making. The goal has now been acknowledged in Finland but the need for Kuka is international: an open platform of expertise will provide interesting solutions worldwide.
