For 10 years, we have contributed to the academic, social, and physical health of children through our residential School Overnight Program. Today we are in a dynamic period of expansion as we advance significant off-site initiatives, including our new partnership with King County at the Brightwater Clean Water facility.

Kate BedientBrightwater Program Manager
Kate is responsible for IslandWood’s educational program at Brightwater. She completed her graduate degree at the North Cascades Institute and previously worked as a teacher for Seattle’s Pacific Science Center, as an outdoor instructor for Lakeside School, and for IslandWood’s Homewaters program. She is a dynamic and energetic staff member with an expertise designing project-based learning experiences for elementary and middle school students.

John HaskinSenior Vice President for Education
For 30 years, John has directed environmental education programs in North Carolina, Ohio, and New York. Most recently, he directed the Graduate Program for Teton Science Schools. John oversees all of IslandWood’s education programs and serves as a faculty member for the Graduate Program. He has a B.S. in Elementary Education, an M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Studies from the Antioch New England Graduate School.

Ben KlaskyPresident and CEO
Ben has served as Executive Director of Net Impact and is a board member of both Donor
Empower and KUOW. His career ranges from advising Fortune 500 companies at Deloitte
Consulting, to teaching in a severely under-resourced school. Ben is an active volunteer, including having mentored a student for 10 years through Harlem Education Activities Fund. Ben has a B.A. in Psychology from Tufts University and a M.B.A. and M.Ed. from Stanford Universi -
Mairead ShuttPhilanthropy Manager
Mairead joined IslandWood in 2010 to coordinate the grants program. She works closely with
foundation and corporate funders to increase support and assist in the creation and
implementation of philanthropic goals. Before joining IslandWood, she worked as a
development officer for The Trust for Public Land. Mairead has a B.A. from Pacific Lutheran
University and an M.B.A. from Brandeis University.
