The furfural business will provide a profitable foundation for the Company to expand into higher value specialty markets of interest to petrochemical companies. The core technology is based on a unique solvent system, gamma valerolactone, with yield and cost advantages as a biomass conversion process.

    James Dumesic earned his B.S. degree from UW-Madison and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He joined the UW-Madison Dept. of Chemical Engineering in 1976 and has been a catalysis pioneer since. Most recently, he studies the use of furan compounds, levulinic acid, and gamma-valerolactone as biomass-derived platform chemicals. Jim has received multiple awards and honors in the field of catalysis and chemical engineering.

    Brent Shanks earned his B.S. degree from Iowa State and his M.S. and Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology. He started his career at Shell Chemical Co. working as a research engineer and dept. manager for over 10 years before returning to academia. Brent currently serves as Director for the NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals and is a professor of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Dept. at Iowa State.
