GlucanBio intends to introduce a North America supply of furfural as a cost-competitive drop-in replacement to the $450M world-wide market. The furfural business will provide a profitable foundation for the Company to expand into higher value specialty markets of interest to petrochemical companies. The core technology is based on a unique solvent system, gamma valerolactone, with yield and cost advantages as a biomass conversion process.

    Vicki Gonzalez brings a wealth of experience to GlucanBio LLC with more than 25 years in both early-stage start-up and Fortune 500 companies. Her responsibilities include developing and executing on a commercialization strategy to create shareholder value. Vicki received her BSc in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M and a MBA degree from Washington University in St. Louis.

  • Jim Dumesic Ph.D.
    CTO, Research & Development

    James Dumesic earned his B.S. degree from UW-Madison and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. He joined the UW-Madison Dept. of Chemical Engineering in 1976 and has been a catalysis pioneer since. Most recently, he studies the use of furan compounds, levulinic acid, and gamma-valerolactone as biomass-derived platform chemicals. Jim has received multiple awards and honors in the field of catalysis and chemical engineering.

  • Brent Shanks Ph.D.
    CTO, Process Development

    Brent Shanks earned his B.S. degree from Iowa State and his M.S. and Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology. He started his career at Shell Chemical Co. working as a research engineer and dept. manager for over 10 years before returning to academia. Brent currently serves as Director for the NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals and is a professor of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Dept. at Iowa State.

    Vice president, Business Development

    Mike Berezo brings 30 years of experience in the chemicals and materials industry where he held senior management positions in operations and business management. He began his career with Monsanto in Industrial Chemical sales, moving to positions in product and business management with increasing responsibility and eventually assuming senior management roles at Solutia. Berezo holds an AB Cum Laude in Biological Sciences from Harvard University
