Company Summary

In 2002 Gelateria Naia was the first to market artisanal gelato in the Bay Area. Naia’s passion is genuine local flavor – Naia partners directly with local farmers like ALBA Organics [Salinas], Lindcove Ranch [Exeter], Fiddyment Farms [Lincoln], and local artisans like Blue Bottle Coffee and Numi Tea [Oakland] and TCHO Chocolate [San Francisco].

In 2011 Naia launched Bar Gelato, another first-to-market product: gelato in ice pop form.

Team

  • Chris Tan
    Principal and Co-Founder

Chris owns a majority of Naia, founded the company 10 years ago and has been involved in all aspects of the company.

When he first arrived in the Bay Area in 1999, Chris couldn't find a decent cup of gelato anywhere. Prior to founding Naia he was Director of Engineering at Calimetrics, a high-tech startup; after Sept 11 the startup went away and Chris refocused his time on pursuing his passion and bringing gelato to the Bay Area and beyond.

  • Trevor Morris
    Co-Founder

Trevor first discovered gelato while vacationing in Italy. A twenty-year veteran of the food service industry, Trevor recognized a need for high-quality gelato in the Bay Area.

He was brought on to the Naia team in 2003 to lend his operational expertise at growing the business from a successful single store in downtown Berkeley. Being raised on a family run dairy, he also brought a first-hand knowledge of milk/agricultural issues to the team

  • John Toth
    Board Member

John is a big fan of eating Bar Gelato. Connecting to Naia through ICA (Inner City Advisors) in 2010, John brings to Naia a financial background steeped in ice cream.

Currently CFO of ARC [NYSE:ARC] and prior to that at Bell-Carter Foods and Fresh Express, John advised Skinny Cow Ice Cream in its $71mm sale to Dreyer's/Nestle and also advised Turtle Mountain/Soy Delicious/So Delicious in a capital raise and distribution partnership.
