In the US alone, over a quarter million people suffer from from spinal cord injuries, with over 10,000 new cases every year, incurring over $200,000 each in medical costs, much of which goes into physical therapy. However, an inherent flaw of the system has patients only motivated by the eventual restoration of function in their limbs. While modern medicine has increased the success rate of PT programs, the cost and strain associated with attempting a full recovery eventually forces some patients to drop out of therapy.
