Discovery by Dr. Bristow that alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor stimulates generation of new CD4 helper T cells has led to development of an orally available small molecule, Alphataxin, to treat immune deficiency that occurs in chronic infection, HIV, malnutrition, and within tumors. Alphataxin has been shown to increase circulating and tumor-infiltrating CD4 helper T cells and to safely suppress tumor growth in kidney and colon cancer mouse models.
