About this Program

XLR8UH is a first-of-its kind, award winning Proof-of-Concept Center and Venture Accelerator. The program, a partnership between the University of Hawai‘i and Sultan Ventures, educates, mentors and invests in University of Hawai‘i's research and talent, ranging from students to post docs, faculty and alumni. XLR8UH is one of the first public university investment programs in the nation, revolutionizing the way innovation is commercialized at universities.

SBA Growth Accelerator Fund Competition recognized XLR8UH as one of the nation’s top accelerators 3 years in a row (2015, 2016, 2017). In addition, the XLR8UH program was also recently awarded a U.S. Department of Commerce Regional Innovation Strategies i6 challenge grant, managed by the EDA's Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The University of Hawai‘i System is the State’s leading engine for economic growth and diversification, stimulating the local economy with jobs, research and skilled workers. The University maintains a distinct geographic advantage with its position between east and west, creating unique opportunities for international leadership and influence. The University of Hawai‘i annually brings in hundreds of millions in research dollars across a myriad of scientific studies, creating opportunities to generate cutting edge discoveries and intellectual property (IP) that not only have great potential economic value, but also more importantly significant societal impacting benefits. Additionally, the University has recently established an aggressive new initiative to further grow and transform into a $1 billion research enterprise in partnership with various community supporters and business groups. Therefore, while many startup accelerators focus on the digital sector, we believe that many unparalleled, high-growth opportunities already exist and will continue to develop at the University of Hawai‘i from all disciplines, including clean tech, energy, engineering, biotech, and healthcare.

Applicants must have an affiliation with the University of Hawaii to be considered. Affiliation means a current student, alumni, faculty, staff, licensing UH technology.
