The TMC Biodesign Program is a one-year, full time, paid program for aspiring entrepreneurs that brings together talented post-grad individuals worldwide from various backgrounds—including medicine, engineering, business, computer science, design, and research— to create solutions for healthcare’s greatest unmet needs. Founders are mentored through a proven development process that encompasses both product and business life cycles. With full immersion in the clinical experience, founders gain the fundamentals necessary to transform ideas into products, and products into new startup companies. Founders are based in the TMC Innovation, a collaborative, integrated community of healthcare startups in various stages of growth and corporate partners supporting innovation.

Who should apply?
● Diverse entrepreneurial thinkers who have the drive to create change, but require the financial and professional support to catapult their ideas from a concept to a company.
● Collaborative problem solvers interested in evaluating the various unmet health challenges in our society--especially for those citizens in underserved populations.
● Current/former clinicians, researchers, engineers, or software developers, and those who are excited to build and own a startup company to reinvent the future of healthcare.
● This is not an academic exercise, so ideal candidates are individuals who are prepared to commit the next 3-5 years to driving their Biodesign startup to the next level!

Successful applicants will be placed into one of two tracks: Digital Health or Medical Device, based on their desired preference. Biodesign founders are placed alongside two other individuals selected by TMC Biodesign at the start of the program, so applicants must possess patience, the ability to operate with flexibility and an open-mind, and the personality capable of contributing towards positive team dynamics under stress.

How it works:
The team makeup consists of a business, clinical, and technical lead. These individuals can represent a variety of backgrounds for instance:

1. Clinical Lead: established or in-training physicians, nurses, pharmacists, or others whose experience includes patient management
2. Business Lead: serial entrepreneur (does not necessarily have to be in the life sciences space), leader in previous startup(s), or industry experienced individual with business education
3. Technical Lead: software developer, engineer (from a variety of disciplines), or research scientist

The program consists of 3 phases:
(PHASE 1) During the first few months, founders spend their time in the clinical setting building a database of unmet clinical needs through shadowing, observing procedures, and interviewing clinicians and hospital administrators. The first phase is completed once the founders are able to down select and prioritize their collective interests in a few unmet needs. (PHASE 2) The next phase requires the founders to ideate solutions that address their top unmet need and to perform the necessary diligence to assess the potential business opportunity. (PHASE 3) The final phase requires the founders to build a sustainable company leveraging the expertise and mentorship provided by the TMC Innovation community, the program curriculum materials, and the provided seed funding. At the end of this 12-month program, the Biodesign companies are expected to reach the level of self-sustainability through external funding mechanisms.

Digital Health and Medical Device Tracks

DIGITAL HEALTH
The Digital Health Team takes a novel approach to Biodesign by focusing exclusively on creating digital health solutions for health care’s greatest unmet needs. Founders collaborate to design transformative mobile, web and cloud-based products, data analytics, remote monitoring, sensors and wearables, population health management, EMR solutions and telemedicine.

MEDICAL DEVICE
The Medical Device Team applies proven Biodesign principles to developing novel medical devices with the goal of revolutionizing medicine. The team will shadow experts in a variety of clinical focus areas to gather inspiration for inventing minimally-invasive devices or implants, point-of-care diagnostics, clinical or surgical tools, and other original medical device solutions to impact how care is delivered.
