Smart City Works is a next-generation cohort-based business accelerator for early-stage founder teams focused on solving urban challenges through infrastructure, SAAS systems, and IoT innovation. We are looking for start-ups with solutions that address significant gaps in timely social and civic challenges in cities.

For our Fall 2024 “AI in Urban Innovation” cohort, we are focused specifically on companies bringing next-generation artificial intelligence to ethically and thoughtfully address the societal progression of our urban environments. From transportation to energy and sustainability, from public health and wellness to education and public safety, from breaking down traditional barriers to building up the infrastructure of the future, AI is unmistakably advancing these areas and the solutions designed for them. We are looking for companies with AI solutions that significantly impact and improve one or more of the ways communities support daily life and the progression to the future, including, for example, working remotely, energy storage and use, carbon capture and storage, food supply or disposition, waste reduction, autonomous transport, public safety, public trust, IoT device and data security, and supply-chain integrity, among others. In particular, special consideration is given to companies focused on solutions addressing problems in the following three areas:

SUSTAINABILITY – Energy/ Carbon Reduction – Solutions that increase the use and availability of renewables, foster greater energy storage capacity and battery usage, convert waste to energy, reduce energy use or improve efficiency; reduce reliance on fossil fuels; cut pollutants like methane and soot; expand carbon sinks; or spur decarbonization.

RESILIENCE – Community Health and Public Safety – Solutions and/or IoT technologies that address the safety, security and resilience of urban dwellers; that mitigate the impact of pandemics, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, demographic shocks, or other natural or man-made shocks; or that protect critical infrastructure.

TRUST – Counter-Fake/ Cybersecurity – Solutions that can safeguard data sets and IoT communications at scale include technologies that utilize AI solutions to improve the value, use, and trust of data sets; or that leverage IoT technologies and devices to improve social trust, government and business processes, supply chain security, and/ or urban life.
