COPD, asthma and Cystic Fibrosis affect 40 million Americans. Unfortunately, successful diagnosis and treatment is limited by current diagnostic methods, which are imprecise (spirometry) and/or involve radiation (Xrays, CT). Moreover, none see past the first 6 branches of the lung. Polarean’s technology can visualize all 23 branches, including alveoli, and these small airways are where lung disease begins, and where the benefits of therapy can first be detected.
Our technology works with traditional MRI. Polarean takes Xenon, an inert gas, and hyperpolarizes the nucleus to create an MRI signal 100,000x stronger. A patient inhales a small amount of the gas and undergoes a 10 second breath-hold MRI scan, resulting in a highly detailed image of lung ventilation.
