About this Program

Urban Challenge is an open call competition for technology startups to develop new ideas to make the West Midlands a better place to live and work by pitching directly to the Mayor and the chance to work directly with officials from the West Midlands Combined Authority.

There are four separate challenges that startups can apply for, each encompassing a crucial aspect of UrbanTech, and a critical challenge to the West Midlands Combined Authority. They are based around: wellbeing, housing, youth unemployment and digital citizenship. One startup will be selected per challenge.

Startups will win £20,000 (cash + AWS Credits) plus a three-month paid pilot (Apr-Jun 2018) with the West Midlands Combined Authority, and support by Public in developing the proposition, pitch and sales strategy.

Urban Challenge is supported by Public, which has been established to help technology startups transform public services, providing capital, networks, insight and support so they can access the £320 billion global GovTech market.

Led by ex-deputy head of the No.10 policy unit, Daniel Korski, and early stage investor, Alexander de Carvalho, Public’s team has operational experience of government, startups, technology and finance, to help startups do business successfully with the public sector.
