Upon graduation from the University of Western Ontario (B.A. Political Science and Economics) in 1976, Mr. MacCannell joined Bell Canada’s Marketing Group in Toronto. With the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in Canada in 1980, he left Bell to join Canadian Telecommunications Group (CTG), a young “ start up” company as the company’s ninth employee. The company grew quickly achieving revenues of C$ 80 Million in five years (having become a public company in 1983) and Mr. MacCannell progressed, during that time, through various positions of management to the position of Vice President and General Manager of the Central Region in 1984. In May of 1986 Mr. MacCannell left CTG to join Mitel Corporation as Vice President and General Manager of their new Information Systems Division shortly after British Telecom PLC had purchased a controlling interest in Mitel and purchased all of the outstanding shares of CTG. He held that position and served on the Executive Committee of the Canada, Caribbean and Latin American Region until he left Mitel Corporation in 1989 to co-found, with two other partners, Troy Technologies Limited. Since that time Mr. MacCannell has served as both an investor in, and as President of Troy as it has progressed through its various phases of development. Today, Troy, which is located in Vaughan, Ontario continues as a boutique investment organization focused on early to mid stage investments in information technology, healthcare, and energy and environmental conservation. In terms of other business related education, Mr. MacCannell has participated in The Art of Venturing Program at the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and numerous programs in business valuation, business planning, and negotiation. Mr. MacCannell is a Director or Advisory Board member of a number of companies including First Med Inc., The Toronto Center for Advanced Reproductive Technology, Telecorp Products Inc., Bluestone Investments Limited, and is past Director of the York Technology Association, CAYRE (Community Alliance for York Region Education) and the Association of Competitive Telecommunications Suppliers. He is a founding member of York Angel Investors Inc. and serves as a member of the Board of Directors and as President of the organization.
